MOCT
MOCT (Men Of Considerable Taste) offers a tasty new sound for blues, soul and popular music lovers alike. Their debut album ‘Look at the Time’ (Cool Buzz) is the result of a musical odyssey by some of the Netherlands’ best (blues)musicians. The album features mainly originals that are based on powerful riffs and soulful song writing, contrasted by bluesy harp and guitars. In addition, ‘Look at the Time’ offers some surprising covers by Al Kooper, Tony Joe White and Lester Butler’s 13 (featuring Lester Butler’s guitarist Alex Schultz as a special guest). And to top it all off with a unique and poppy edge, the album was mixed by Prince-engineer David Z. in Nashville and mastered by Greg Reierson in Minneapolis.
The gentlemen displaying all this extraordinary taste are Pieter van der Pluijm (vocals, harp), Sander Kooiman (guitar), Jules van Brakel (bass) and Joost Tazelaar (drums). These are renowned names in the international blues scene, whose bands The Strikes, Drippin’ Honey and The Backbones have played festivals like Lowlands, North Sea Jazz, South By South West (Austin, TX) and the Belgian Rhythm & Blues Festival, to name just a few. This means that MOCT also manage to create something exciting on stage, ranging from a blistering festival set to steaming after-hours sessions.
What makes MOCT special in comparison to earlier work of the individual band members, is that this album owes up to all their musical influences from the ’60 up until now, without losing their blues-oriented way of playing. The songs are still all about simplicity, intensity, grooves and sound. Add to this mix the excellent vocal and instrumental craftsmanship and the results is that music lovers with wide ranging – but considerable – taste will enjoy every single note.
Look at the Time will be released on April 23rd 2010. The release party will take place in the afternoon of April 25th, in the ‘Supermarkt’ in The Hague.
